Meet an Animator: Ely Romo-Anler

Where do you live?

Currently I live close to Uppsala, Sweden.

Did you study animation at a school or are you self-taught?

I took an animation workshop that got me my first job in animation. After that, knowing that I needed to improve, I enrolled to college to study traditional animation in Canada. But even after that I am still learning from other people around me and constantly pushing myself and doing my best. I’ve been very lucky to meet people willing to teach me and guide me.

How long have you been animating, and what made you become interested in it?

My path in animation has been very long. I think I’ve been drawing all my life. I used to tape cartoons when I was little and draw from the TV. In high school, I met a girl who told me she wanted to study animation. That was the first time I heard about animation as a profession and I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Do any particular styles or animators inspire your work?

I watch every animation that comes across, I love the old Looney tunes cartoons and the Miyazaki’s movies but I think I refer more to the old Disney animations for inspiration. I keep watching the Silly Symphonies, Alice in Wonderland, Fantasia, The Sword in the Stone, etc. Also I love illustration, like for children’s books, I always go to that section of bookstores and libraries, although now we have more resources to find inspiration through the internet.

Besides animation, what are you interested in?

Other than animation and illustration, I like knitting, baking and kittens :)
